Hoosier Artist ~ Terry Armstrong Workshop

The Michigan City Art League is hosting a one day watercolor workshop with Hoosier artist, Terry Armstrong.

Terry Armstrong Painting

Terry Armstrong Painting

Armstrong is a Hoosier-born artist. Greatly influenced by visits to his grandparents’ Indiana farm and the natural beauty of the area, he uses the spontaneity of watercolor, dry brush, and egg tempera to capture the true essence of the Midwest. Terry strives for balance between realism and abstraction – where these images excite and evoke a strong feeling or memory.  Although his paintings focus on the simple life of rural America, the artwork is also representative of the changing seasons and his childhood memories.

Having spent most of his childhood in Columbia City, Indiana, Terry graduated from Carroll High School, Ft. Wayne, and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in both fine art and commercial art from Indiana University/Purdue University, Ft. Wayne.  He retired from Biomet, Inc., an orthopedic company in Warsaw, after 25 years of service in marketing communications to pursue his passion of fine art.  He now focuses on painting full time, instructing workshops, as well as teaching watercolor at Grace College. His work has captured many honors, among which are the People’s Choice Awards and Best of Show in numerous art exhibits, inclusion into the 2008, 2010 and 2012 Biennial Contemporary American Realism exhibit at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Terry’s paintings have been exhibited in numerous galleries in the United States, including the Castle Art Gallery in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Courtyard Gallery, New Buffalo, Michigan.  Terry is a member of the Lakeland Art Association, Warsaw; the Hoosier Salon, Indianapolis, Indiana; and is juried into the Indiana Artisan Program.

The Terry Armstrong Watercolor Studio and Gallery is located in their historic 1870’s brick home located on twelve acres near Warsaw, Indiana, where he lives with his wife, Mary, and daughter, Teryn.  Although much of his spare time is painting in his studio, Terry is also an avid runner and enjoys fishing, hiking and the outdoors.

Cost to attend this one day workshop is $65 for MCAL members and $70 for non-members. The workshop is being held on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at the Michigan City Public Library, located at Fourth and Franklin streets, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT.

Merry Christmas ~ Happy New Year

It’s that time of year when the world is aglow! It is just days before Christmas 2012 and MCAL’s Fall Classes have been over for a month now. Living on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, we are settling  in for a long winters nap. During December, January and February, we take our winter hiatus. Spring classes will resume the first Tuesday in March.

Behind the scenes your board members are hard at work, lining up instructors for the 12 weeks from March to May. They are also looking at artist for possible workshops and planning events for our members.

As you enjoy this winter break, take the time to bring out your paints and have a go at some of the winter beauty that can be found all around you.

See you in March! Until than, Happy Painting!

Classy Glass

Barbara DeBernardo presented two weeks of panting on glass and all those who gave it a try have said they loved the experience with the new medium of glass painting.

Barbara provided a very diverse selection of glass to paint on. She explained how to prepare your glass by cleaning it with rubbing alcohol several times and allowing the piece to cure for 24 to 48 hours before applying any paint. She also supplied the enamel paint for the class to use. They learned that they could also use acrylic paints on glass. After painting the glass, Barbara showed how after several days if you decided you needed to correct something how use of the rubbing alcohol made it possible to remove the paint. Once you completed you project, she instructed the class to allow you piece of glass are to cure for 21 days. After this time you paint is set and permanently affixed to the glass.

As you can see every one enjoyed the two weeks and managed to create some very beautiful art pieces.

Next week we welcome June Krsek who will instruct classes in watercolor painting.
